SATSUKI: “LUMINOUS” column from GAMING SPIRIT

Former member of the band RENTRER EN SOI, SATSUKI delivers us at this beginning of year with his ninth CD, distributed in Europe in digital by BISHI-BISHI.

Ninth CD indeed since the beginning of his solo career in 2009, seven singles, a mini-album that also includes a DVD, and from now on, his first real L.P. LUMINOUS, released in CD format on January 9th of this very same year.

The start-up of TWILIGHT is done with an electro tune; a light ambient side, to which is added some effects in SATSUKI’s voice, progressively introduced. The strong sounds gradually become more and more present, accompanying a rather calm voice during the first verse. The chorus however gives a good kick, with singing that remains calm but is sufficiently cadenced so that the magic can work. We can notice an epic solo that reflects the general ambiance of this first piece. DETERMINATION being more charging and less melodious, somehow carries well its name. Then, we inevitably wait for a sweet “Romance”: wrong! This one turns out extra punchy—rarely would romances be so dynamic. FATE will surely be much prized during live shows, with its regular “Fate” rhythmic chants, and its entry for that matter will be prized by a wild public.

After spending that much energy, AVEC LE TEMPS calms the set a bit; we let ourselves be carried away by this song without ever falling asleep. We find ourselves delicately placed this way at the entrance of INSIDE: the introduction on piano seems to predict a soft ballad, but in the end we are surprised by scratch effects which lead us to more intense music. Then, the pressure falls to return to some gentleness. The concept is repeated, but never bores; the surprise continues to work thanks to the diverse sounds that cut in; and even more so when the surprise turns into even more surprises with those screams, or those windy “Woohoo hoo” at the end. From this point on, the finesse seems to have been set aside-- the start of the fanfare of NVN and the dark atmosphere of its ending part prove this, as well as the velocity of MALACHITE and the muffled growls. AFTER GLOW seems to possess traditional electro-like sounds. Incidentally, the electro style takes a predominant role on this track. We are carried away in a bubble with In a Lucid Dream: piano, violin, and the crystal-clear voice are the major axes of this spatial time, separating itself from its predecessors. The latter would have been the concluding piece of many disks, but SATSUKI has decided otherwise, and prefers to let us end on a more symbolic ambiance of his album, with the very spirited SYMPATHY that has an end more proper for a rock concert.

For a first full-album, we can say that SATSUKI did all the opposite of straining himself! The ambiances vary much, going from rock, to melodic metal, passing by calm atmospheres, as well as adding strong sounds here and electro there. Recommended—and not only to Visual Kei fans.
